Mount Barker

rich and beautiful

Mt Barker serves a wide agricultural area & is the administrative centre for the shire of Plantagenet. Once noted for apples, sheep and cattle, it has now diversified into tourism, viticulture & wildflowers.

One of the earliest discoveries of Western Australian (named by Dr T B Wilson RN, in honour of his friend Captain Collett Barker) it is now an ideal holiday centre with ample shopping and recreation facilities. Map ....

A granite caim with a bronze direction plate stands at the top of Mt Barker Hill & a bench seat of granite was built on the site by the Plantagenet Historical Society in memory of the district's pioneer women. The hill is also the site of the towering 168 metre television tower which has become a major landmark.

The Old Police Station is located at the northern end of town on the Albany Highway opposite Valley Views Motel. It was built by convicts and opened for business on March 6, 1868. The police station is now a museum and must not be missed during your visit.

St Werburgh's Chapel was built in 1872-73 on the Egerton-Warburton property to serve the pioneers of the district. The ornamental chancel screen and altar rails of wrought iron were beaten back on the property. The walls were made of clay and chopped straw & the woodwork was local Jarrah. The property had been part of the Egerton-Warburton family for more than 125 years and their hospitality is summed up by the words over the gate. "This gate is free to all good men and true- Right welcome then if worthy to pass."

The first vineyard to be established was the district's namesake "Plantagenet", which has gone on to be a success both nationally and internationally. The district now boats many boutique & large wineries - offering the connoisseur a wine to suit every palate. Over 30 vineyards are now located in the Shire.

Mt Barker is framed by the beauty of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges which lie to the north-east and east. The Stirling Range National Park covers an area of 115,671 hectares of natural vegetation and scenery. There are many walking trails providing easy access to wildlife and wildflowers. The Porongurup Range is the oldest volcanic range in the world and the park covers an area of 2401 hectares. Again, easy walking tracks lead to most of the peaks giving spectacular views.

Mount Barker is truly "The Centre Of Attractions" in the Great Southern and is "Yours To Discover". Stay a day, stay a week and stay at Valley Views Motel and Chalets. It is an ideal base from which  to tour & explore the area and Great Southern Region.
