Great Southern Wine Region

Mt. Barker is the centre of the wine growing region and makes an ideal base for day trips to any of the surrounding regions.

The largest of Australia's wine regions, the Great Southern, stretches from Frankland River in the north to Albany in the south and 100 Kilometres from East to West.

From the first five-acre planting of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon at Forrest Hill in the Mount Barker area in 1965, the region's vineyards have grown with all the major grape varieties represented.

Of these, Riesling has been the region's most famous variety, winning show medals and acclaim across Australia. In recent years both Chardonnay and Shiraz from the Great Southern have also proven themselves excellent performers.

In general terms the climate has been compared to that of Bordeaux, described as Mediterranean, with warm dry summers and cool, wet winters.

The potential of the region is vast, with vineyards nestled between mixed farming, operations, agro forestry, and surrounded by pristine parks.

With over 40 cellar door outlets in the region, what better than to see and try for yourselves. Take time out to meander around the vineyards and enjoy the slower pace of life for a while.

Here there is no hustle and bustle, no deadlines - only the timelessness of a country still clean and vibrant. Here there is time to climb that mountain and stop for a glass of wine on the way home.

Relax and enjoy, wander off the beaten track, see the wild bush flowers and know that at the end if the road there will be a friendly face ready to welcome you in the Great Southern way.
